Gin Blasts: Best of 2015

2015 was another huge year for gin. It was tough to pick a top five but in no particular order I give you my top 5 stand out gins of 2015.

Liverpool Gin Valencian Orange (Special Edition)

With a lot of orange and citrus driven gins on the market now, these types of special editions can often be over looked. This expression from the relatively new distillery in Liverpool does shout out at me though. The orange flavour sits nicely between the other botanicals used and the spice and juniper hit remain strong, making this a hugely versatile gin. Perfect for a negroni. Just saying.

Glendalough Summer Edition

This had the true WOW effect, something that a lot of distilleries seem to miss these days. Very, very complex with a perfect balance of floral and citrus notes that envelop around fresh juniper and a fruity character which lingers nicely in the mouth. Perfect for an interesting G&T with a multitude of garnishes.

Helsinki Dry Gin

Another new comer to the market and another one that will leave you wanting more. This has a wonderful vegetal character with hints of sage and thyme and a herbaceous finish, which lends itself well to a warming G&T with sage and lemon as garnish.

Broken Heart

A gin with a heart-warming story and a brilliant flavour to boot. The juniper, lavender and lemon peel jump from the glass and make this a truly interesting tipple. The balance of spice and freshness is brilliant on the finish. Try this again in a G&T with a lemon wheel and some coffee beans.

Kyro Distillery Koskue

This has quickly become my go-to aged gin and is a perfect example of how aging can work wonders. This has clear notes of caramel, honey and ginger and the texture is nothing short of incredible. Really big, powerful, complex flavours waft from the glass the creamy character help make this a very versatile gin with many possible serves. Try it with ginger ale and no garnish or stir it into an old fashioned with some dark brown sugar, juniper bitters and a slice of grapefruit.
