Gin Blasts: Lebensstern London Dry Gin

So, I was racking my brains to decide what to try one day at The OC when Lebensstern Dry came up so I thought; let’s do it! I was expecting a big German builder to punch me in the face with a handful of spice, juniper and un-cooked meat, but in fact the experience was very, very different.

At first I was like "What the hell is that fruit?" It tasted like cider, not gin! Well, it was pear and I was utterly in love. I was expecting a complex, war ridden journey but in the end I felt like I was wandering through Somerset, picking fresh pears from the trees of unsuspecting farmers while drinking Thatchers and discussing butter.

This fantastic Austrian gin was originally produced for the Lebensstern Bar in Berlin which stocks over 1,800 spirits and is a local hotspot for artists, businessmen and the city’s most cosmopolitan crowd. The spirit is produced in one of the most renowned distilleries in Austria, named Freihof, and has a subtle mix of pear, eucalyptus, elderflower and juniper among other well balanced botanicals.

So if you want fruit in your life but are feeling a bit more adventurous than quaffing the gin liqueurs that are out there these days, then pour some of this in your glass. Serve it with tonic, tons of ice and a slice of pear or apple or of even a chunk of Essential Waitrose Quince (I haven’t had that either but I’m sure it’s there). Don’t let the angry looking bottle distract you, there is elegance within the glass and does something very, very different. A wonderful find!

Cheers!

You can pick up a bottle here.
