This time, a gin that comes the tragic story. And that story is of two Germans who were living in New Zealand, both master distillers and where perfecting a gin recipe for years. Sadly, one passed away before they had time to finish but the other accomplished their very dream. And he did a great job. A truly great job. And this gin is Broken Heart Gin.
Although when I first tasted it; it didn’t quite fit with my mood. Its 11 botanicals that are a mix of the usual suspects but in some way this gin gives off an air of chocolate and coffee towards the finish. This was something I wasn’t expecting at all and in all honesty, at first I wasn’t too keen. But once mixed with tonic, this gin truly came to life.
The main botanicals are said to be juniper, lavender, lemon peel, coriander and cinnamon, but I would love to know what else is hidden inside that bottle. There is a great air of complexity that wafts from the glass and the balance really is perfect. It is housed within a beautiful bottle which shows two sides of a heart split between the front and the back.
They recommend a twist of orange to be added but I have preferred adding a large glug to a lot of ice in a big balloon glass with a lemon peel and a few coffee beans - charged with Fever Tree Indian. Just perfect.
Cheers!
