Often music and drink go very much hand in hand. Both help to uplift us, console us and often help us understand what the hell is going on at that present time. And there is nothing better than to enjoy these two fruits of the world together. So I've picked 8 songs that include talks of some of our favourite spirits and drinks, so you can enjoy this magical pairing too.
I've also even included some recommendations for drinks that I know would go wonderfully well with these brilliant songs, so you can sit back relax and enjoy it all together.
So, in no particular order I give you my top 8 songs to drink too.
1.“Keep knockin' back the whiskey sours”
This track is by a relatively unknown band (that will feature again within this list) and gives the option of drinking whiskey sours to help after hard work and when there seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. But we all know that whiskey sours can be enjoyed any time of the day. And they will always make us win.
Drink: Have a bourbon sour with this. You know you want to.
2. The Pogues – Streams of Whiskey
“I am going, I am going, where streams of whiskey are flowing”
Everyone has heard of these guys and their classic Christmas track but their songs are laden with brilliant drinking related lyrics. The name of this track says it all but another brilliant one from within is: “I'll go down to the Chelsea, I'll walk in on my feet, But I'll leave there on my back”. Such positive and purposeful lyrics that we can all relate to.
Drink: This song calls for a quarter bottle of Jamesons, no ice, no water. Just the good stuff. Not even a glass.
3. “Gonna walk around and drink some more”
This wonderful song from the Brooklyn based mature punk/indie band brings back memories of house parties and massive nights out. Explore these guys back catalogue for much more brilliance. I've given you a cheeky little live version to check this track out. If you get the chance, make sure you see these guys, they're one of the best bands on the planet right now.
Drink: As long as you're walking around and drinking a little more, your pretty free to your own interpretation.
4. Neil Diamond – Red Red Wine
“Red, red wine, Go to my head.” Later covered by UB40, this song tells us to use red wine to help make sense of our problems. Often, it works. No... I take that back. It always works.
Drink: Naturally I recommend a good glass of red... or probably a bottle.
5. Murder By Death – Kentucky Bourbon
“It's sweet Kentucky Bourbon for me.” The shortest of them all from that relatively unknown band. The lyrics say it all to be honest. Check out more from these guys if you want more great drinking music.
Drink: Have a shot of Bourbon with this, maybe some of the Four Roses.
6. Muddy Waters – I'm Ready
“Well I been drinkin’ gin like never before, I’m feelin’ so good… honey that’s for sure.” This is one of my all time favourites. Anyone who sings about gin rocks my world and Muddy Waters does it with extreme precision. This is one to groove away to. Are you ready?
Drink: Naturally gin is the choice here, I would personally choose a perfectly made White Lady to wash down this wonderful tune.
7. Korpiklaani – Vodka
“Vodka! Vodka! Vodka! Vodka! Hey!” So now for something a little more heavy, a good old wack of Folk Metal from Finland. If you thought you liked vodka, maybe you should think again as these guys seem to have a bit of a soft spot for it too.
Drink: Vodka from the bottle please with this one, possibly even a little warm.
8. Dropkick Murphys – Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced
“So Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced.” This was a tough choice as I knew I had to include something from these wonderfully crusty Boston punk rockers but I couldn't quite decide. But in the end, this anthem seemed fitting enough to finish off with seeing as you have already indulged a lot of whiskey and gin while reading this I'm sure.
Drink: I highly recommend a plastic pint glass full of beer and the understanding that it is probably going to get spilled quite a lot towards the end.

This is naturally just the tip of the iceberg and hopefully I have given you some fodder for further exploration. I look forward to revisiting this again so I can show you more.
